The most excellent katiebelle2882 of the BUST boards posted this story from Reuters today, about how men are paying pimps to hook them up with kids as young as ten in motel rooms around Atlanta, Georgia. Apparently, ATL's status as a major transportation hub makes it the country's number one destination for sex tourists who might otherwise have had to fly to Thailand in order to readily abuse children. The prostitution of kids under eighteen is a huge moneymaker for organized crime syndicates, and the market of both pedophiles and providers is huge -- the University of Pennsylvania estimates that between 200,000 and 300,000 underage kids are prostituted in the US every year. But I have to wonder about this statistic, quoted by Reuters from the Atlanta Women's Project:
"Up to 90 percent of runaways are believed to end up as prostitutes, with a third lured into prostitution within 48 hours."
Really? Nine out of ten? I'd believe that 90 percent of child prostitutes are runaways, but I don't know if I believe the reverse. Maybe I just don't want to think that nine out of ten of the girls I saw at the shelter tonight have been or will be trading sex for money.
Of course, BUST poster doodlebug notes that part of the reason the problem persists is that some of these pedophiles and pimps are men in positions of power -- "decision-makers at city hall, the chamber of commerce, and many other power centres in the community."
"I'm telling you, women," she adds, "we feminists need to suck it up and run for those political positions. None of this is ever going to change until we do the thing."
And she's right. But sadly for me, she's Canadian. So I hereby nominate Angry Black Bitch for President!
